FAQs for full time students

When鈥檚 the next open event?

We have regular open events throughout the year, designed to give you all the information you need to make sure you choose the right course and find out what financial support is available. You鈥檒l find details of our open events here. In fact, why not and save time on the day?

When can I apply?

For any of our full time courses you can apply right away.聽 Applications are dealt with on a first come, first served basis so getting yours in as early as you can gives you a better chance of being offered a place.

How do I choose the right course for me?

If you know what you want to do, you can browse courses by subject or use our course search tool on the right hand side and click on the name for more details.聽 If you鈥檇 like some inspiration, our latest videos will help you explore your career options and show you what current students are doing.

How do I apply?

Once you鈥檝e decided on your course, just click 鈥榓pply鈥 on the course information page to get started. If this is the first time you鈥檝e submitted an online application, you鈥檒l be asked to create an account by choosing a username and password.

If you are applying to study AS Levels you should go the course information page for one of the subjects you would like to take. At the end of the application you will be able to select all the AS subjects you are interested in applying for, which will add them all to your application.

Can I apply for more than one course?

We only take one application at a time but if you decide the course you chose isn鈥檛 for you during the process, we can change your application. Please get in touch with us if you would like to make any changes or if you would like advice and guidance on making the right course choice for your career goals.

What happens after I鈥檝e applied?

Firstly, you鈥檒l be given a conditional offer of a place. For certain courses you may be asked to complete an assessment or take part in an audition. If so, we鈥檒l give you more details when we offer you a place.

I鈥檝e applied but not heard anything since. What should I do?

If you鈥檝e not heard anything within a week of applying, call Admissions on 01495 333777. They鈥檒l be able to let you know the status of your application and what happens next.

How will I know if I鈥檝e chosen the right course?

Our Career Pathways tool will help you to work through your options and discover different jobs, as well as the qualifications you need to get there. Plus, you can view helpful information such as salary and availability of roles. You can also speak to our Student Recruitment Team for advice and guidance on the right course choice for you.

Do I have to have an interview?

The entry criteria can be found on the course information page on our website and it will specifically advise if an interview is needed.

What if I can鈥檛 make my interview?

If you need to have an interview and can鈥檛 make your appointment, just call our Admissions team on 01495 333777 and we鈥檒l rearrange it.

I鈥檝e had an offer. Do I just turn up for college at the start of term?

No, you need to accept your offer and meet the conditions to reserve your place.聽 You鈥檒l also need to enrol before the start of term, and we鈥檒l let you know in July when you need to enrol, which will be some time in August.

Do I need to pay any course fees?

There are no tuition fees for any of our full time further education courses, but if you鈥檙e a full time learner, you鈥檒l have to pay a 拢10 administration fee when you enrol.聽 There might be other costs to pay, such as membership fees, studio fees, salon fees and exam fees.聽 We鈥檒l let you know about these when you come for your interview. You can find out more about getting help with costs and financial support then, or you can simply contact Admissions on 01495 333777 for more information.

Will I need to buy any kit or equipment?

For some courses you鈥檒l need essential kit or equipment, such as safety equipment, hairdressing and beauty kits, uniform or books.聽 This information is usually on the course information page on our website, but if you鈥檙e unsure, our Admissions team will be happy to help on 01495 333777.

How many hours and days per week can I expect to be in college?

Course times vary, but you should expect to be in college from Monday to Friday for anything between 9am-5pm.聽 You鈥檒l find out the exact days and times for your course when you get your timetable at induction.

When can I enrol?

If you鈥檝e already applied and have had a conditional offer, we鈥檒l send you a letter inviting you to an enrolment session.聽聽 If you haven鈥檛 applied yet, it鈥檚 not too late to join us in September.聽 Apply online now or call our Admissions team on 01495 333777 and they鈥檒l let you know what you need to do.

What do I need to bring with me when I enrol?

Your invitation to enrol will include details of what you need to bring.聽 Typically you鈥檒l need:

  • One form of personal identification, e.g. passport, national insurance card
  • Your National insurance number
  • A travel letter from your local authority (if applicable) and the admin fee for your bus pass (16-18 year olds 拢10.00, 19 years plus 拢40.00)
  • Your learner administration fee (拢10.00) payable by all full time learners
  • Your exam result slip or proof of qualifications to show you meet your course conditions
  • Any course or PPE fees, if needed

I鈥檓 not sure if I鈥檝e chosen the right course. What should I do?

If you haven鈥檛 already enrolled, call our Student Recruitment team on 01495 333777.聽 They can offer advice and guidance to help you decide on a course that鈥檚 right for you. If you鈥檝e already enrolled and started college, make sure you talk to us as soon as you start to have any doubts.聽 If it鈥檚 within the first six weeks of starting, contact Learner Services and we鈥檒l do our best to transfer you to a more suitable course. If it鈥檚 after the first six weeks, you can get support and advice at any time by talking to your Personal Tutor, Head of Learner Services or Learner Services on your campus.

Financial support and transport

Can I get any financial support while I鈥檓 studying?

There are lots of grants and financial support funds available, many of which depend on your household income and personal circumstances.聽For more details, contact the Customer Services team on 01495 333777.

How do I get a bus pass and how much will it cost?

If you鈥檙e aged 16 to 18 and live in Newport, Torfaen, Caerphilly or Blaenau Gwent, you can apply to your local authority (LA) for a bus pass.聽If you live in Monmouthshire, you can apply direct to the college at enrolment and pay 拢10.00 per term, plus 拢1.50 per single journey.聽 If you鈥檙e over 18, you can apply for a 女优阁 concessionary bus pass at enrolment and pay 拢40.00 per term plus 拢1.50 per single journey.

You might also qualify for our Leaner Support Fund (LSF), which could help with the cost of your bus pass.聽 Contact Learner Services at your campus for an application form.聽 If you鈥檙e aged 16 to 18, you鈥檒l still need to also apply to your local authority.

FAQs for part-time time students

Who can apply?

Anyone over the age of 19 at the start of the academic year can apply for a standard part-time course with us.

Learners under the age of 19, at the start of the academic year, cannot automatically apply for or enrol onto a standard part-time course due to government funding guidelines. We therefore recommend those learners review our enhanced part-time and full-time courses instead, which are fully funded. If you have any questions regarding this you can contact our Student Recruitment Team on 01495 333777 or at hello@coleggwent.ac.uk and they can provide further guidance.

What is an enhanced part-time course?

On an enhanced part time course, you will normally be studying 12 鈥 16 hours per week and sometimes more, anywhere from 9:00am onwards on the specified day(s). Government funding is usually available, meaning there are no course fees.

When can I apply?

For any of our part-time courses you can apply right away. Some of our part-time courses are very popular, so the sooner you apply the sooner you have chance of securing a place.

Do I need to pay any course fees for a part-time course?

If a part-time course has a fee this will be advised on our website.

Are there any discounts on the course fees advertised?

Some of our courses do offer course fee reduction for those on means tested benefits. If you are unsure if you would qualify for a fee reduction please contact our Student Recruitment Team on 01495 333777 or at hello@coleggwent.ac.uk

Can I pay a course fee in instalments?

For some of our longer part-time courses you may be able to pay in instalments and this will be arranged with you via our Finance Team. If would like further information please contact our Student Recruitment Team on 01495 333777 or email hello@coleggwent.ac.uk

How do I apply for a part-time course?

All applications are made via our website. Once you鈥檝e found a part-time course you are interested in, just click the 鈥淎pply鈥 button on the course page to get started. The application is separated into five easy steps and takes minutes to complete. Please ensure that your email address is correct in your application as we will send regular updates to the email address you provide.

If there are no entry requirements for a course, you should be able to progress through all the screens to enrolment. Where the course has a fee, it is payment for the course that secures your place and you will also be able to pay online as part of the application process.

Can I apply for more than one part-time course?

If all the courses are part-time then you can apply for more than one course at a time. You just need to check the dates and times of the different courses don鈥檛 clash. You should follow the same application process for each different part-time course you want to take.

What happens after I鈥檝e applied?

If there are any entry criteria for a course then you will firstly be given a conditional offer of a place. Once you accept that conditional offer, you will then need to upload evidence to your 女优阁 account that shows you meet the entry criteria for the course. This will enable your application to progress and we will provide email updates at each stage in the process.

If there are no entry requirements for this course, you should be able to progress through all the screens online yourself, make the required payment if there is a fee involved and automatically be enrolled onto the course.

What if the course is full?

If you apply for a course that is full you will either be advised there are no spaces available or, where the course has a waiting list option, you will be advised you have been added to the waiting list. If space becomes available, anyone on the waiting list will be contacted and offered it on a first come first served basis.

However, we do also recommend you check other dates that the course may be running, which could still have spaces available and you can therefore secure a place that way.

Once you have reached the enrolment stage, you should receive an automated email confirmation of this. It will tell you the day and time you need to come to campus to be formally enrolled onto the course. You would normally report to Reception to do this.
